Best London Walks that Combine Exercise with Sightseeing

London, besides all its other attractions and qualities, is basically a walk-able city, especially for visitors basically because the main attractions are all located in and around central London. The city also offers many guided walking tours that are very informative because of the presence of a guide. Moreover, walking through London streets offers many advantages such as helping you to see the true colours of the city and to get to experience its cultural heritage by getting close to the local people. A walking spree through the streets also brings you close to various places that you might just pass by without bothering about them. You can discover a lot of little corners and get more details of the city. Moreover, you can capture all that you want in your camera. The South Bank

For most tourists a walk in the South Bank area provides plenty of opportunities to combine physical exercise with sightseeing as you can take a route that enables you to start your walk from Westminster Bridge. On your way you can see the Houses of Parliament and the Big Ben. Your route will then take you to the London Eye which presents a pretty picture and is one of the most popular of London’s attractions. You will then proceed towards the Southbank Centre which has many markets, restaurants and theatres in it. Your route will take a curve from here and you will then reach some great attractions such as the Globe Theatre, Millennium Bridge and Tate Modern. The route will then lead to Borough Market that offers great food options and is the ideal place to end your walk for a bit of refreshment, especially on a Saturday.

South Kensington to Soho

A walk from South Kensington to Soho is the best way to experience the aura of some of London’s most famous attractions. You can start the walk at South Kensington Tube Station and walk along Brompton Road where you will come across the V&A Museum and the Natural History Museum. Walking towards the northeast, you will find some iconic department stores such as Harvey Nichols and Harrods and some five star hotels before the route reaches the posh and sophisticated area of Knightsbridge where many of the city’s top elite lives. The walking route will then lead you to Hyde Park Corner where you can see Wellington Arch and Apsley House. You will then proceed towards Piccadilly cutting through Mayfair and St James’s. You can see the Royal Academy on one side while on the other side you will see Green Park and the famous Food Halls of Fortnum and Mason. The walk will end at Piccadilly Circus where you can see the statue of Anteros below the advertising screens.

Walking by the River Thames

For a fantastic walk you can take the Thames Walk and walk along the River, particularly on a stretch that starts from Hammersmith Bridge and ends at Chiswick. The path follows the course of the river and goes past some of the most beautiful houses in the city, historic pubs and little parks. On the way, you can stop at The Dove where you can have a waterfront drink while seeing the rowers going past in their boats. At Chiswick, you can see even more beautiful houses that have attractive riverside gardens. You can move to Chiswick High Road where you will find many shops and restaurants.

Walking in the Royal Parks

Walking in the best London Parks is an activity that you can really enjoy. London has eight Royal Parks that offer vast expanses of lush green meadows waiting to be explored and enjoyed. Walking in these parks can be fun and as such you can start from the west side of Hyde Park at Kensington Palace. You can explore the hidden little gardens by the side of the palace and then proceed to the Round Pond and on to the Serpentine. If you have the time, it is a good idea to visit the Serpentine Gallery and the Serpentine Sackler Gallery. Hyde Park itself is full of attractions that you can explore on foot such as the Speakers’ Corner, Serpentine Lake, Serpentine Space Shuttle, Peter Pan statue and Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain. Emerging out of Hyde Park Corner, you can proceed to Green Park, where you can admire the daffodils. You can see Buckingham Palace on the southeast corner and if you are on time, you can watch the Changing of the Guards ceremony. St James’s Park is on the other side of the palace, offering gorgeous gardens throughout the spring and summer. You can enjoy seeing the birds playing in the pond.

 

Hampstead Village Walks

If you wish to enjoy a walk in a rural environment while still being in the city, you should go to Hampstead Village and start at the tube station and walk down Heath Street and Church Row, which is a very pretty street. Passing by the cemetery you will reach Holy Walk which is also very pretty. Winding up to Holly Hill, you will find the Holly Bush Pub located on Holly Mount. After a refreshing drink, you can get down the steps of Golden Yard and reach Heath Street and then on to Hampstead High Street that offers many shops and restaurants. You end up at Hampstead Heath where you can explore the park.

 Walking on any of these routes will also enable you to see many of the attractions of London.
