Famous Film and TV Show Locations in London

London has played a major part in many blockbuster movies and popular TV shows thanks to its legendary skyline, atmospheric streets and iconic landmarks.
Here are some of the London locations that have been featured in many films.

Art Galleries

Movies such as Match Point, Children of Men and Bridget Jones’s Diary were filmed in the architectural beauty of the Tate Modern. The National Portrait Gallery’s Portrait restaurant was used in the filming of the Julia Roberts film Closer. This movie also features St’ Paul’s Cathedral and the SEA LIFE London Aquarium.

Greenwich

This Borough of London is home to many grand buildings and therefore is a movie director’s dream. The famous Old Royal Naval College featured in Gulliver’s Travels, Les Miserables and was the backdrop for the opening carriage chase scene in the Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Notting Hill

The famous Notting Hill movie put the chic London neighbourhood of the same name into the limelight. This Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts blockbuster also features many other star attractions such as The Ritz Hotel, The Savoy Hotel and Kenwood House. Portobello Road and the Notting Hill Coronet Cinema also have scenes in the film. Notting Hill and the famous scenes from the film are located on the doorstep of the Grand Royale London Hyde Park hotel. Notting Hill Tube Station is only a 9 minute walk away from the hotel so it is also easy to get around to the many other film locations in the capital from this hotel.

London Icons

The capitals icons pop up in many London-set movies from red phone boxes to double decker buses and Tower bridge to Big Ben. These are seen in major movie hits such as the Bond film Skyfall and The Da Vinci Code. Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament are featured in the post-apocalyptic movie 28 Days Later.

London’s South Bank

Movies Wimbledon, Thunderbirds, Fast and Furious 6 and Thor: The Dark World all has the ever changing skyline of London’s South Bank as a popular filming location. This skyline includes the picturesque buildings of the Tate Modern, OXO Tower, London Eye and the Millennium Bridge.

London’s Skyline

The iconic buildings of the epic skyline of the city have been given a great amount of screen time. Daniel Craig in Skyfall is filmed surveying the skyline from the roof of the Department for Energy and Climate Change. The view from this building’s roof includes Big Ben and the Ministry of Defence dotted with flags.

Trafalgar Square

It’s no surprise that Trafalgar Square has starred in numerous movies and TV shows as it is one of the most recognised landmarks in the world. The movies and landmarks that feature this spot include Captain America, St. Tinian’s and the American comedy series Ugly Betty.

Tower Bridge

This famous landmark provides the dramatic backdrop for many films namely Fast and Furious 6, Tomb Raider, Mission Impossible and Thunderbirds. The bridge was also used in a scene of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason when Bridget Jones walks across the Tower Bridge with movie extras in the background.

The Tube

About Time and Love Actually has included the London Underground as a star role in some of their scenes. The Tube also had a key role in the film Sliding Doors starring Gwyneth Paltrow as her fate depends on whether she catches the next Tube train or not. The London Underground is also where a chase scene occurs in the Bond movie Skyfall.

Paddington

Paddington, the film about a famous friendly bear, was filmed in and around Paddington Station. In the movie, the front of ‘Paddington Station’ was actually the front of Marylebone Station as Paddington Station doesn’t have much of a frontage. Marylebone Station also features on screen in other movies, including the Beatle’s feature A Hard Day’s Night over 50 years ago.

The home of the Brown family was filmed at 30 Chalcot Crescent in nearby Primrose Hill and the antique shop is on Portobello Road is actually Alice’s Antiques on Portobello Road. The National History Museum also appears in the Paddington film and this venue has also appeared in Lord of the Apes, The Legend of Tarzan, Greystoke and Basic Instinct II.

The Shaftesbury Hyde Park International Hotel is a 10 minute walk away from Paddington Station. This location makes this hotel a great base for exploring the famous film locations of the Paddington movie.

As well as movies, there are also many television programmes, past and present, which have been set in London’s various boroughs.

Absolutely Fabulous

This programme starring Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders was filmed in Holland Park as the set for the house of Jennifer Saunders was located there.

The Mighty Boosh

This was filmed in a brick-a-brac shop known as Nabootique in a part of Dalston. The flat above the shop was the home of the characters in the series, Howard Moon and Vince Noir. All 3 series of the programme were filmed in the flat and the shop below it, respectively.

The Bill

The Bill was a classic British police show that ran for 26 years. The fictional borough of Canley in East London was actually parts of Greenwich, Tooting, Croydon and the London Docklands.

EastEnders

This long running drama is based in the East of London but most of the filming actually takes place in the BBC studios in Hertfordshire. When the show is aired it is made to look like the fictional borough of Walford is in the East End of London.

There are organised trips in London that provide guided tours of famous film and movie locations around London. One of the most popular tours is the Harry Potter Tour.
There are many sights around London that were used for the filming of the magical Harry Potter including:

•London Zoo where Harry talks to the snake
•Great Scotland Yard which is the location of the Ministry of Magic
•And many more.
