The Malmaison Reading is one of the oldest standing train station hotels.

The Berkshire town of Reading is one of the gems of rural England, a historic settlement that has become a fascinating and modern place to visit. The town, in the south west of the UK, has still standing ruins of Reading Abbey, the Pendon Museum featuring a recreation of 1930s Britain, and it is close to the world famous Stonehenge attraction. Take a barge trip through the canals of Reading to get deeper into the heart of the town, or hit the shops in its increasingly popular high street. One of the best hotels to stay in during your visit is the Malmaison Reading, a unique place to stay which captures some of the town’s history.

The Malmaison hotel group boasts that there is no other place where you can find its signature blend of quality accommodation and city living. Each of its hotels across the UK are housed in iconic buildings, meaning you could find yourself checking in to a castle, a hospital, or even a converted Royal Mail sorting office. In Reading, it is the oldest surviving station hotel in the world, having been built in 1844. The station hotel has preserved aspects of its history, and has the added benefit of being right by the central station, making access easy for guests at the Malmaison.

This is a hotel that prides itself on style and decadence, with features such as mood lighting, roll-top baths and large soft beds coming as standard for all guests. When you check in, select from 75 fabulous rooms and suites which are individually styled and lavishly furnished. They are full air conditioned and come with an en-suite bathroom with baths and power shower, a digital TV and satellite channels, as well as exclusive toiletries, fast room service, WiFi internet access, hairdryers, ironing board and iron and complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. The hotel also offers same-day laundry and dry cleaning, while if you are travelling as a family you can put an extra bed in your room for just £30 a night.

As with many of  the Malmaison brand hotels, there are extras to savour as well as a beautifully appointed room. You can relax and unwind with a cocktail in your hand at the chic Malbar, which specialises in providing some of the comfiest sofas and tastiest drinks in Reading. While you are there, you can select from a range of world-class wines in the cellar, and enjoy an ice cold beer from the fridge. The Malmaison staff excel in creating an atmosphere where you are catered for and able to sit back and relax. Unlike the train station food of the past, the MalmaisonBrasserie serves up a wide range of locally sourced dishes with a contemporary French influence, including succulent steaks, mouth-watering Malburgers, country lamb and delicious, fresh seafood. This is a hotel that is perfect for a business getaway or a romantic retreat, and as soon as you check in you can start enjoying what the Malmaison, and Reading, has to offer.
